Secrets uncovered
campfire smokeAt some point, either by accident or practice, man discovered methods of preserving & softening leather. The skins were treated with things like smoke, grease, or bark extracts. In primitive societies, the art of preserving skins was a closely guarded secret passed down from father to son. As civilization grew, trade guilds were formed and tanners & leather workers shared their knowledge. Through the nineteenth century, many forms of tanning were taking place. Most popular, was and still is, a process called chrome tanning. It is very efficient, and accounts for about 85% of all tanning done today.
